Top Pick Karaoke Spots for Doha’s Songbirds

There must be very few people around the world who don't love or at least appreciate music. Its emotive power makes us feel elated, excited, empowered, melancholy, and even tearful. It has the ability to elicit memories and desires and links us to our culture. These are just some of the reasons we love to hear music and belt it out from the top of our lungs. However, of the seven billion people or so on the planet, only a small percentage can actually sing like nightingales and make a living inspiring the masses. For the rest of us, there's always karaoke!

With a population of nearly three million, made up of over one hundred nationalities, Qatar has its fair share of budding songsters, amateur singers, and wannabe singers. Plus, those of us who can't sing but can't help belting one out when the feeling takes hold. Fortunately, Doha has an array of karaoke venues where we can all perform, or at least warble along to a tune, and we've picked our most-loved for you to try…

Top Pick Karaoke Bars

Of the various establishments that promise Karaoke heaven to residents across Doha, these are our five top favourites:

Hot Shot Café

Hot Shot Café and Restaurant is a relatively new eatery on the outskirts of Doha on the Old Airport Road. The diner serves an extensive menu including pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, grilled dishes, Asian and Filipino dishes, seafood buckets, soups and salads, as well as an array of cakes and pastries, bubble teas, fruit juices, milkshakes, mocktails, coffees and teas. While the venue's ground floor is given over to the restaurant, with its funky and colourful velvet sofas and bucket chairs, leather booths, and random Kaws figures dotted around, the upper floor is a karaoke lovers' haven.

Four karaoke rooms are available – Silver, Gold, Diamond and VIP. Each room is decked out with big screens, high-tech karaoke equipment, spacious leather sofas and tables for food and drinks, not to mention the neon lighting, disco balls and disco-style shiny geometric patterned wallpaper. Prices range from QAR 80 per hour for the Silver Room Package for 3-5 people, QAR 120 per hour for the Gold and Diamond Room Packages for 5-8 people, to QAR 150 per hour for the VIP Room Package for 10-15 people. Each package also includes a complimentary drink jug (two for the VIP room). However, if you and your singing buddies are hungry, order food and beverages up to a certain amount, and karaoke room use is free!

Isla Mexican Kitchen

Image: Tenpin

Isla Mexican Kitchen must be one of Qatar's most colourful eateries. The restaurant is a riot of Mexican fiesta colours, with rich red wallpaper, dark wood floors, mismatched chairs, sofas and cushions in a myriad of colours, rainbow-coloured bunting hanging from the ceilings, Mexican knick-knacks and sombreros adorning every shelf and wall space, and brightly coloured murals depicting the day of the dead characters. The food is also a colourful riot of Mexican flavours, from traditional recipes, classic dishes and street food to modern interpretations. And though Mexican music and live singers complete the venue's fiesta vibe, you can always bring your voice to the party in the restaurant's second-floor karaoke room.

Isla’s karaoke room is entered via an almost secret door, well-disguised as part of a mural wall painting. However, once the door is opened, guests are led upstairs to a small room that emulates the party atmosphere of the main restaurant. The small space is filled with bright murals and wall art, coloured lanterns, party lights, a big screen and karaoke equipment. If you love to party, sing and eat fantastic food, this is the place for you. You can hire Isla’s karaoke room for QAR 100 per person for 2-3 hours.

Not far from downtown Msheireb, Xuan Tea is a purveyor of the hugely popular Taiwanese drink Bubble Tea - tea blended with milk or juice, various flavours and toppings, and some tapioca pearls thrown in for good measure. Aside from the tea and several traditional Taiwanese dishes - crispy taro balls, fried chicken and street potato balls - the tea shop also boasts several private karaoke rooms. Decked out with UBox karaoke systems, with over 60,000 songs in many different languages, mammoth TV screens, comfortable sofas and air-conditioning, these mirrored lounges are the perfect places to go with friends to relax, have fun and sing your hearts out. A Deluxe room hosting up to four people will set you back QAR 69 for an hour. A Suite with an oversized sofa is QAR 99 per hour for up to ten guests.

Opened next door in 2022, the second branch of Luna Karaoke, attached to the Dimsum House Restaurant, offers a further four karaoke rooms. The Classic hosts up to two people for just QAR 59 per hour, the Deluxe, up to four people for QAR 69, the Deluxe Plus, up to six people for QAR 79; and the Junior Suite, up to eight guests for QAR 89.

Tabi Boba has two cafes offering karaoke to the masses, one in Al Sadd and the other in Abu Hamour. Like Luna Karaoke, this joint is based on the Taiwanese craze of drinking Bubble Tea and has a vast menu of flavours and types to choose from, as well as coffee style bubble drinks and milkshakes. Apart from the bubbles, Tabi Boba also hosts several games and karaoke rooms. Karaoke systems in comfortable and funky spaces cater to groups of up to five and provide an extensive catalogue of songs. To get one hour on the microphone, all you need to do is buy four drinks! And, if you've had enough karaoke (really?!?), you could always try out the games rooms, in which you'll find Darts Live. This electronic, network-connected game allows you to play various darts games with people worldwide. If you are feeling peckish after all the fun, round the evening off with snacks and hot food from the bar, including salted egg yolk potato ridges, salted egg fish skin, chilli crab, seaweed tempura bites, waffles and steamed chicken or roast chicken.
